Start Something!
Start Something with Courage, Confidence and Compassion!

BRENT CARVER, one of our Community’s most Gifted Actors, once defined, the three basic requirements for good acting: Courage, Confidence and Compassion.

BRENT died a few weeks ago, marking a profound and tragic loss to the Theater, both as an art form and an industry! His unique Talent was somewhat unmatchable…

Are you sad and angry and confused right now?
I am!
How can anyone not be!

The Present Moment

I have been told that Blog Posts are generally significantly shorter than the kind of writing I do. And while never one to conform, it occurs to me that occasionally a Brief Thought can be just enough to make someone’s day.
And so, for Today, I am offering the following Brief Thought…
(and who knows, if I get a few more of these underbelt, I might even develop a Twitter Feed!)

Today is a Gift!
That’s why they call it the Present!

It’s about two weeks until Christmas!
And very much in spite of the commercial push to get us to buy things which now begins at Labor Day, I grew up in a World in which even these first two weeks of December were considered very much Ordinary Time.
Back then, we lived more in the Present Moment!

To the Artist with the Broken Wing

As Classes for this Semester come to completion, and the Season of Commencement is upon us, I offer this in honor of my students, past, present, and future. Perhaps it will speak to the Artist in each of us…

Be not afraid.
You are Safe.
Your time here is short — briefer even than we think.
This World is not made to sustain ethereal Souls such as yourself for too long
Perhaps you are from another ether and must return there;
Perhaps the oxygen here cannot sustain your delicate lungs long-term.
Either way, you must get to work.
You mustn’t dawdle.
Mustn’t stravage.
Do what you are here to do.
You must Begin!

When someone arrives with a precious Gift such as yours,

To All of the Students Who Have Failed My Class…

ReportCardAs another Academic Year draws to a close let us review:

1. Your parents paying a quarter of a million dollars for your college education does not entitle you to a diploma. You earn that through your work.
Yes, the money is obscene. Yes, as NEAL GABLER put it in last month’s article in the THE ATLANTIC [Link may be found here:

], “I’m not saying that universities are extortionist, but, well…universities are extortionist” — Educational institutions can be a lot like the Profiteering Insurance Companies that call themselves “Health Care.”  They don’t care about your Health. They are there to take your money.

Nevertheless, Tuition Payment does not entitle you to a degree.
It entitles you to something much better: an Education.

2. When you get out into the real world and hold a job for 6 months, that does not qualify you as an expert in your field. (more…)

RICK at Last Year's MESSY MARCH Celebration

RICK at Last Year’s MESSY MARCH Celebration

MESSY MARCH!
What again? Already?
YES!
And Do We Need it Now!

It is time to Let Go of All Judgement
Accept Imperfection.
Just Do It.
Not Worry About it.
Stop Polishing.
Be Human.
Create Something.
If it sucks and it’s a Total Mess, that’s Fine.
It’s Messy March! (more…)

Make a Joyful Noise

Screen Shot 2015-10-18 at 8.31.24 PMRecently, My Friend’s Mom died.
I was very sad to receive this news.
She was a great Lady and I Loved her.
I wanted to write something, and amidst the hundred million commitments between receiving the news on Sunday and the Funeral Service on Tuesday Evening, I did.
It was neither as fleshed out nor as Poetic nor as Deeply Expressive as I wished it to be.
But it was what I had.

I arrived at the Funeral Home and told my friend,
“I wrote something.
I am happy to read it.
And I am happy to not read it.
It’s not very good.
I am also happy just to give it to you.”

She shrugged, and said empathetically, “I don’t know.”

Small Leaves of Basil

IMG_5588IMG_5609Earlier this Summer,
I planted a Basil Plant in my Kitchen Window.
I wanted a Rich and Robust Verdant Plant with Opulent Flavorful Leaves of Basil, like the kind you find in the Italian Markets at the Peak of Season.
I was wrapped in Glad Expectancy!
But that didn’t happen.
Instead, I got a long kinda’ scrawny, spindly plant with very small and thin pale green leaves.

And although it wasn’t what I was hoping for,
It is still a Miracle.

I stop and Count the Miracles.

No Burning Bush

IMG_4729I bought my friend MARK an Ice Pop Maker for his Birthday.
The Perfect Gift! He Loves Ice Pops!
I headed up to Canada to bring it to him.

The night before, as I was packing, I wondered if it would be OK to bring it on the plane.
It was an Ice Cream Maker -type gizmo, which contained some kind of freezing fluid inside (Water? Dry Ice? It didn’t say…)

Questions Swirled around in my head…
