Christmas Card 2024

This year’s Christmas Card Story is later than usual, although many of you hold to the romantic notion that they never make it out before Easter Sunday anyway. Fair enough! And my guarantee is that always I get it to you by the 4th of July! 🙂

But this year, perhaps like me, you have found the past eight weeks to be a bit unsettling. I find that the Creative Process cannot but be affected by all that’s going on in the world.

I had a Christmas Story for you close to being ready by the 31st of January, but by then the world had changed so much that I was compelled to scrap it and write this one. And, as a writer friend likes to say, “The story comes when it comes.” So, it took a bit more time this year.

As our society has become increasingly conditioned to only giving time for 160 characters or less, please consider the short story format in which these ideas are presented.

Today is the Ides of March. Oye! That, too…

Yet, perhaps today is the perfect day, in this final week of winter, to give yourself a break for an hour, cozy up with a mug of tea, hot cocoa, or your favorite warm beverage, and just enjoy taking this journey back in time.

Please receive this as the gift that it is intended — an offering of encouragement and inspiration — perhaps it will serve to motivate you to take action toward your vision for a better world, whatever that may be. At the very least, I hope it will serve to remind you that we have been here before, and we have come through it all right.

May the Blessings of this Season of Kindness and Inclusivity be yours every day!

A Thrill Of Hope

By Arnold J. Mungioli

Impenetrable darkness blanketed the stars – there was nothing left to wish upon, the moon never rose that night, and the sky felt like an ominous black expanse of hopelessness. This was the Judea of King Herod.

Suddenly, a blazing light arose in the sky irradiating the land, sea and the air itself. It brought to a halt everything the people had suffered their whole life long – despair, despondency, doom, and the lack of light – all dispelled in a moment! It needed to be let go of – all of it — as something new had now ignited! This light both defined and defied the darkness!

Every person, be they shepherd, townsfolk, innkeeper, tax collector, or king, felt a deep chill to the bone. Oh, God, what now? But, for those who stood still and bathed in the glow of this light, something else welled up inside them – a thrill of hope!

One must consider the landscape upon which hope appeared that night. A society living in despondency for generations, giving birth to people who survive without dreams, who go on to rear children without hope – and then quite suddenly they all at once experience what it means when “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – a thrill of hope!

Herod was an asshole! It had been a gloomy time since the dissolution of the Hasmonean Dynasty, and the ushering in of his newly declared Herodian Dynasty. Herod had been king for some 37 years, now. What a vitriolic buffoon!

Spiteful. Petty. Vindictive. Cowardly. Cruel. And Viciously Crafty.

He had no interest in protecting the people over whom he ruled – only in what he could take from them. His need for attention was insatiable. A narcissistic sociopath, the people’s lives were so much the worse for his being in office at all.

And the people would pray from the Ketuvim, the Writings section of the Hebrew Bible, Psalm 109:8…”May his days be few; may another take his office.” That’s in the Bible!

Christmas Card 2023

Santacon 2023

By Arnold J. Mungioli

’Twas an unseasonably warm afternoon, [two weeks] before Christmas, and all through the [park]… I found myself clearly overdressed, but dressing in layers was an option for me only to a limited degree – the suit is the suit. I was expected to look a certain way, and I respected that.  If one has a message to deliver, it is often wisest to appear in whatever image the recipient will be most able to receive it from you. Dressed for success, I sat on the park bench and waited. It would not be long.

“Coolest Day of the Whole Freakin’ Year! It takes a certain kind of guy to pull it off!” he thought to himself as he combed his hair looking at his reflection in the mirror that morning. This simple black plastic comb had been a gift from his mother in his Christmas Stocking when he was a young boy, and it’s the one he always used. She had noticed when he began to take some pride in his appearance, and she helped him along. He kept it on the Lucite shelf above the sink next to a quartz crystal that an ex had left behind. He remembered that the crystal was supposed to have special powers – he didn’t believe that, yet there was some sliver of doubt: what if he’d just not yet discovered its powers? So, he never got rid of it, just in case.

Pleased with what he saw in the mirror, he gave himself two thumbs up sticking out his tongue; then, pointing his camera to the mirror, he proclaimed out loud an exclamation of self-praise that some might have thought overrated. “I’m awesome,” he declared with the confidence of a guy who knows he is lacking, but still takes a good photo of himself for social media. Click. Post.

He oozed confidence today. He had downloaded the app. He had started drinking at 10am. He’d been working out to get ready for this. He even got the Santacon badge which boasted that his fifteen bucks went to all the cool charities supported by Santacon, such as Burning Man!

Christmas celebrates giving. If one maintains a limited understanding of what giving can do to transform human beings and transform the world, then the true magic of the season may be lost on a person. He kept his nose mostly into his phone, brokering deals and making money even as he drank – in cases of such behavior, the magic of life itself may be lost on a person.

Christmas Card 2022

For those of you who know me well, my Christmas Card is early this year! Some years it doesn’t make it out until March!

For those of you with whom I am more recently acquainted… Yes! I do understand that it is a very strange thing to receive a Christmas Card in February! (It doesn’t really ever go out as late as March… well, once maybe! 🙂 ) But it has become a bit of a tradition over these last few decades that it arrives in midwinter…

It is my wish to send a special gift – something from my heart – to celebrate the Joy of the Holiday Season, and to remind us to keep cognizant of the Spirit of Love and Kindness throughout the year! I am a great believer in the power of words. Since my teen years, I would collect quotes and stories about Christmas and send them out to everyone as my Christmas Card. Eventually, I began to write my own original stories. (This, as it turns out, takes even longer! 🙂 )

I am inspired by the experience of each Christmas Holiday Season and every year, I am stirred by its beautiful values. I love to celebrate and savor the time… I usually don’t get to baking until some mid-January weekend. I capture whatever bits of Christmas Magic I can throughout the winter and weave them into a story that I hope will delight you and lift your spirit whenever you may read it!

So, you may choose to dismiss this as, “Oh, that Crazy Guy is sending out Christmas Cards in February again!” or you may choose to receive it in the spirit in which it is sent: May you enjoy all of the Magic and Sparkle and Beauty of the many Gifts of Christmas (Peace on Earth! Good Will toward Everyone! Love and Kindness, Compassion, Generosity and Cheer! Wassail! Wassail!) Boy, oh Boy! Could we ever use more of those things now…

I hope that you will appreciate this years’ story: It is the story five brothers. Perhaps you have met some of them already. And it is about the importance, and sometimes the difficulties and challenges, of sharing the unique gifts we bring to the world!

So please, if you will, make yourself your favorite warm beverage – a Hot Cacao is always nice! – sit back this lovely day or evening, allow yourself a brief respite,  and have a nice read, enjoying the magic, wonder and delight of “Five Brothers’ Unique Gifts…” (more…)

Christmas Card 2020

It’s early this year, I know! For those who know me, my Christmas Card usually arrives sometime in February — but this year, we’ll break with tradition, and celebrate early! 🙂
The idea of sending this out after Christmas is in part to remind us all to celebrate Gratitude, Readiness, Openness and Willingness, and all the values of Christmas the whole year through… Perhaps this reminder is as much needed now as ever. We’ve all been through a lot this past year. One begins to wonder if there is any rhyme or reason to it all. This year’s Christmas Story invites us to consider another perspective on just how much of what we experience is the randomness of time and how much of it — well, as The Course In Miracles puts it, “What could you not accept, if you but knew that everything that happens, all events, past, present and to come, are gently planned by One Whose only purpose is your good? And so, inspired by that idea, I offer the following short story for a quiet January afternoon.
Perhaps you would like to make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, or bubbling herbal tea, or some delightful warm beverage, and take a few minutes to cozy up and enjoy this little story...

The Gift from the Cabinet with the Mullion Doors

by Arnold J. Mungioli

I could tell you what set it all in motion. I was there when the Youth arrived. He had a curiosity and a kind of insistence that comes from decades and decades of asserting one’s free will, and never appreciating the true gift that free will is – or life for that matter. I had never been a fan of free will, myself – not when given to those in the physical realm, anyway. I had always maintained to the Supreme Being that life on earth was too great a gift for a Soul to comprehend, let alone handle their own choices. It would inevitably lead to pain and troubles. It was someone from the physical realm – went by the name of John Keats — who once wrote, “Do you not see how necessary a world of pains and troubles is to school an Intelligence and make it a soul?”

CHRISTMAS 2020

This Year’s Tree…

I know. I have been unusually silent on here for Christmas time! There are so many wonderful things to be said about this magical holiday season of Miracles! And ordinarily, I cannot stop saying them!

2020 has been an exceptionally Magical year, giving us time to pause, reflect and reassess how we spend the precious little time we have on this Earth. This Holiday Season has very much followed suit. Shaking it up! Giving us a different way to look at things we have grown accustomed to doing some particular way.

For so many of us, the Christmas Season happens by rote. Every Year it’s the same: Shop, Decorate, Tree, Cards, Wrap, Ship, Family, Cook, Collapse… Nope – Not this Year! This Year we will need to find what is important to us and figure out how to hang on to that!

Sweetest Day

Happy Sweetest Day!

Today is Sweetest Day Celebrated the Third Saturday of October. As a kid growing up, I became enamored with the local Hallmark Card store that was on my walk to school. I became friendly with the family that owned it, and eventually worked there, decorating the windows or handling the register… I was probably 12 years old the first time I entered that store. It was right around this time of year, and Harrison who was to become one of my very best friends was wrestling with a crepe paper tissue monster to get it displayed in time for Halloween. Back then, Halloween decorations went up in October, and Christmas decorations went up in December. Life was simpler, then. Sweetest Day was a holiday brought (more…)

Star of Wonder

2019-12-29 13.50.45“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy”
–Matthew 2:10

Imagine what it must have been like…
To have such Light brought into your Life,
So Suddenly, and from out of nowhere!
Unexpectedly, there it is, Gleaming in the Sky and Giving Light…
Glistening!
Dazling!
Leading!
Shining!

When you call the Integral Yoga Institute, they answer the phone, “How may I be of service?”
I always thought this was so Beautiful.
Of course it is one of the tenets of Yoga to be of Service (The pretzel poses are only one of the eight limbs of Yoga), but to offer this straight out, first thing… it’s Inspiring!

How is your Christmas going?

Grandma’s Stroufeli & DAMON’s MOM’s Pumpkin Bread

On this Sixth Day of Christmas…
New Year’s Eve

It baffles me to see people walking down the street this past week,
Moseying with a kind of laissez-faire attitude,
As if there is nothing much going on.
Awfully Silly.
It’s Christmas!
It is a Twelve-Day Celebration,
If you want it!
Don’t Miss Out!

First Day of Christmas

Our Entranceway…

It can sure be chaos, can’t it though?
Getting ready for a Holiday for which most folks “don’t have time”…
Well, its’ good to remember that none of us “Has Time” for Anything!
It is about Making Time!
It is about what’s important to Us!

It is about the Life that we Choose to Live!

So, just to review:
December 25this Christmas Day.
December 26this the First Day of Christmas!
December 27this the Second Day of Christmas…
And so forth through January 6th, the Twelfth Day of Christmas! (more…)

The Present Moment

I have been told that Blog Posts are generally significantly shorter than the kind of writing I do. And while never one to conform, it occurs to me that occasionally a Brief Thought can be just enough to make someone’s day.
And so, for Today, I am offering the following Brief Thought…
(and who knows, if I get a few more of these underbelt, I might even develop a Twitter Feed!)

Today is a Gift!
That’s why they call it the Present!

It’s about two weeks until Christmas!
And very much in spite of the commercial push to get us to buy things which now begins at Labor Day, I grew up in a World in which even these first two weeks of December were considered very much Ordinary Time.
Back then, we lived more in the Present Moment!
