Sochi 2014

So much can be said.
But Let’s focus on one moment.

It was in the Figure Skating — not sure if it was Long Form or Short Form.
The Beauty of the Figure Skaters tends to give me Stendhal Syndrome.
But there was one Male Skater.
I tried to find his name, but most Olympic Athletes, like Singers and Dancers in the Ensembles of Broadway, are known for their Contribution to a Team, moreso than their individual name or notoriety.
Perhaps this is why we Admire them So Much.

It was not one of the Medalists.
Not even sure he was a finalist.
But there was this Moment… (more…)

Grace at the Token Booth

Baby AJ

Baby AJ

A Christening on Long Island.
Baby AJ.

Trains to Oakdale run every two hours.
Only the 9:41am Train at Jamaica Station will get me there in time.

After four hours sleep,
Long Waits…
R to the F…
I get off at Briarwood — change for the E to Jamaica.
Almost there…

Postings everywhere read: “No Jamaica-bound E Train service at this station!”
Take the F Train on the other side all the way back to 71st/Continental

I will have missed Baby AJ’s Christening.
I am devastated.

Upstairs in the token booth, I find a small East Indian man, eating a bowl of rice (more…)

Don’t Buy It!

Valentines-Day CandleFebruary 14th is St. Valentine’s Day.

According to CNN, last year’s Valentine’s Day spending total for Americans was:
$ 18,600,000,000.00

BIG BUSINESS!

All for a day which honors a third Century Roman Martyr who was beaten, stoned, and then decapitated under the Emperor CLAUDIUS II, for marrying young Christian Couples in secret at a time when it was believed that single men made better soldiers (Less timid in battle; Less responsibilities — More fearless… Not dissimilar to today’s recruiting policies…)

How did this turn into 18.6 Billion Dollars in Spending? (more…)

Doing the Best We Can

New York Subway Platform

Standing on the 42nd Street Subway platform late last night,
I saw a man
Older, somewhat disheveled, unshaven, ungroomed, in old clothes.
He was smoking and walking toward me.
Being the Son of a New York City Cop, I have an instinctual homing device which moves my feet away from potential danger. (more…)

Crazy Grateful

Crazy Grateful!
I am Crazy Grateful today!

Ten Months ago, we received some tragic news.
My Partner’s MOM had had a massive heart attack.
She has been in a Vegetative State since then.
Lots of Prayers…
Lots of Hope… (more…)

Christmas Card 2013

IMG_2593Those of you who know me well know that My Christmas Cards do not make it into the mail until the end of January… This has become somewhat of an annual tradition. They are a Labor of Love; and they take some time…
This Year, I am trying something different. After 35 Years of Cards printed on Red Card Stock in Black Ink with a Gold Stamp, I am posting My Christmas Card for you here. (more…)

The Course of History

MLKDo you think he knew?
Do you think he had any idea?
Or was he just Showing Up for his Life
And doing what was before him to do?

Do you think the Legend is true that he started speaking
And MAHALIA JACKSON standing by said, “Tell ’em about the Dream, MARTIN?”
Or was that what he planned to say? (more…)

Quiescent Faith

Dry Cracked GroundWinter.
The Ground is hard and cracked.
Rows of Barren Trees line the streets.
Nothing is Blooming.
But this does not mean that nothing is Happening.

Under the ground
Where we cannot see (more…)

Cookies

Chocolate Covered Cherry CookiesDo You Like to Bake?

I do.
I was doing my Christmas Baking this week (The Season Continues… We are still celebrating around here…), and as I was mixing the dough with my electric handmixer, I thought back to recipes that read, “Beat for 300 strokes.”

It isn’t that long ago cookie dough was mixed with a fork.
Hershey’s was the only cocoa.
And Nestle’s were the only chocolate chips.

And I began to think about the other Miracles in my Kitchen… (more…)
