PRIDE

NYC Pride 1982

NYC Pride 1982

When I was a twenty-something, I didn’t understand why it was called “Pride.”
I didn’t March back then.
Today I understand
Today I feel it
Today I March
Because We are All One.
What happens to one of us happens to All of Us.

Susan BThere were Women who felt like this
In the Early 1900’s
Having been considered property for centuries,
living without the right to Vote,
without the right to marry whomever they’d choose…
It had gone on so long that it had almost begun to seem acceptable
as Just the Way that it Was.

Suffragettes fought this for years
And Women won the Right to Vote in America!
A Victory for People Here.
An Inspiration for People Everywhere.
Women celebrated their Right to Vote.
Not all over the World.
But here in these United States

I am Proud to be an American.

Rosa PThere were African Americans who felt like this
In the Early 1960’s
Out of a Heritage of slavery
living without the right to marry whomever they’d choose,
segregated, disenfranchised, exploited…
It had gone on so long that it had almost begun to seem acceptable
as Just the Way that it Was.

Civil Rights advocates fought this for years
And We Won!
We Celebrated Desegregation and another step forward in Marriage Equality
A step our Forefathers could not have imagined when drafting the Constitution back in 1787.
Now Interracial marriages are not so uncommon in America.
A Victory for People of all Races Here in this Melting Pot.
An Inspiration for People Everywhere.
We Celebrate Advancements in Civil Rights
Not all over the World.
But here in these United States

I am Proud to be an American.

Equality

26 June 2015

Today, I get to feel like this!
Having been considered for Centuries, “The Love that Dare Not Speak Its Name.”
Until this Moment I was not granted the right to marry whom I choose.
June 26th, 2015, 10am, EST
Surprising that it would take some 2,000 years from the Last Supper when JESUS laid his head upon the chest of JOHN, “the Apostle JESUS Loved”
Or are there places in America where Today’s Supreme Court Ruling is deemed some unacceptable attack?
Does the protection of my Freedoms impinge upon your Freedom to deny my Freedom?
Gay Marriages are now Legal in America.
A Victory for People Here.
An Inspiration for People Everywhere.
We celebrate our Right to Marry
Not all over the World.
But here in these United States

I am Proud to be an American.

Obama on Gay Marriage Ruling

Today We Dance in Celebration
Cheering for a World brought back into Balance
These are the Manifestations of the Values and Beliefs of the People of this Country
And How we who Fight Choose to see the Ideals and Principles on which it was founded.
Learning over and over again that a Victory for Equal Rights
is a Victory for All of Us
Moving one step closer
To the kind of Enlightened and Advanced Society that is our Destiny.
The Course in Miracles says “Heaven and Earth shall pass away
means that they shall not continue to exist as separate states.”

The Work is Not Yet Done.
But Today, We Celebrate!
We Celebrate this Victory for All Americans.
We Celebrate our Slow but Meaningful Progress over this last Century.
For Gay People
For African American People
For Women
For All Americans
For All People Everywhere…

In the words of the President of the United States this morning,
“This ruling is a victory for America.
This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more Free.”

Today I am Proud.

Happy Pride!

  1. This is a great moment in history for us ALL..The dissent of the Scalia, Thomas, and Alito faction is a toothless attempt to continue into the depths of discrimination and halt the progress so desperately needed and wanted by “WE THE PEOPLE.” My husband and I celebrate the joy and relief from the constraints and oppression of the Right Wing Republicans and their Fundamentalist cohorts. I now hope in November we can overturn the hateful course this country is on and let the pendulum swing back into compassion, caring, and true Progress on ALL LEVELS. One thing we have learned is that the opposition is RELENTLESS and POWERFUL and vastly funded. But the TRUTH and POWER IN THAT will overcome..
WE SHALL OVERCOME was the mantra when I was a young man…Now WE HAVE OVERCOME and HAVE TO OVERCOME should be our touchstone…as much as the : “YES WE CAN” motto gave substantial strength to the war effort. I join in the celebration of HUMAN DIGNITY and HUMAN RIGHTS….and the BROTHERHOOD that brings to us all.
    HAPPY PRIDE…..We EARNED IT!

Beautifully said. Here’s hoping Australia will follow the example.
